Fostering Research into Family History

The Tasmanian Family History Society Inc. formerly the Genealogical Society of Tasmania was formed in Hobart in April 1980. Subsequently an open meeting of people interested in forming a Launceston Branch of the Society was held at the Kings Meadows High School on 4 November 1980, and the first Annual General Meeting of the Launceston Branch was held on the 7 April 1981.

The name of the Society was changed to Tasmanian Family History Society Inc. as from 1 April 2001. It exists to promote and support the study and research of family history, to preserve and transcribe records, to publish appropriate literature and to provide members with a high-quality reference library and learning opportunities.

Our branch has a unique and extensive library including a wide range of printed matter, micro-form and CD-ROM records and a range of research tools.  Many of our records are not available online, some are rare and exclusive. The emphasis is on Australian, New Zealand and UK records. Members also have access to Ancestry.com within our library.

Members receive our quality quarterly journal, free access to our library resources where expert assistance is available and can choose to attend our regular workshops. Discounts are available to Society members on some publications.

Our research team will undertake your family history research for members or non-members at a very reasonable rate. This is of particular value to those who cannot attend the library in person or do not have online access.

This web site provides an overview of our branch and its resources and how to access them.  It includes an up-to-date list of coming events and enables users to browse, and order from, the wide range of publications we offer for sale.
